On one side it looks like a regular hamster but on the other side it's revealed to be a cyborg! Plus there are extra flaps that reveal more robotic details along with a light up feature when you push the front right paw.<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4PWtfEBDglJYFW_p1s1RQtHwwIHnSyRKnI82NFVxkZVGmSi9SqMO2PyKfewzamklUIP0QQpVkUHu6dzuXJgF8ExG1fqGXY2_XCxFUHt8nmzA-g__NU3z50LMEPrVNnhAKMZYLEJfNMlGhFqR6i45Bq1DboDMybUznI1EUY2gh0jeUHpHzm3zDXEX3KI3C/s580/MW_Hamster_side34.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="546" data-original-width="580" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4PWtfEBDglJYFW_p1s1RQtHwwIHnSyRKnI82NFVxkZVGmSi9SqMO2PyKfewzamklUIP0QQpVkUHu6dzuXJgF8ExG1fqGXY2_XCxFUHt8nmzA-g__NU3z50LMEPrVNnhAKMZYLEJfNMlGhFqR6i45Bq1DboDMybUznI1EUY2gh0jeUHpHzm3zDXEX3KI3C/s16000/MW_Hamster_side34.jpg" title="Nimesku Hamster production final" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Final production version<br /></td></tr></tbody></table></p><p></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTzFAinnqEULd2EaEDOv-bZMfrrkWNeZaqZhJUQZr7ugtsDbVa6DIZXrDQzH6hh1mbHdmg_2rTrOTIK30IoS81bUg1Z69O9VS109mIpoSwOHHheWAmco-blEDIZdcE5K0myjQwTuPqppKnlVIas8xe9EVYIBWKHmlDzZ6MvlTa8J_v1xiycWgyTo2Z0ila/s580/MW_Hamster_front.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="559" data-original-width="580" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTzFAinnqEULd2EaEDOv-bZMfrrkWNeZaqZhJUQZr7ugtsDbVa6DIZXrDQzH6hh1mbHdmg_2rTrOTIK30IoS81bUg1Z69O9VS109mIpoSwOHHheWAmco-blEDIZdcE5K0myjQwTuPqppKnlVIas8xe9EVYIBWKHmlDzZ6MvlTa8J_v1xiycWgyTo2Z0ila/s16000/MW_Hamster_front.jpg" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Final production version</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><p></p><p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTbs-HiZDEsvIZahyllQF35Un3UMMInITO7oioVmg-hjuG9sdBQ4VUi7WDNFYMCOQGou_wteZCO4Ef7hAsCBnYu2-lX21ePZQ72BqzKArrN1lJB_BesdvwJuv_T5h9kpdXOVd5dfAVLk3J-w3-Wt7KoBoviSJPcaf3wVLsv6KhtIbbbIY9q65MSGo44u2M/s580/MW_Hamster_side.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="528" data-original-width="580" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTbs-HiZDEsvIZahyllQF35Un3UMMInITO7oioVmg-hjuG9sdBQ4VUi7WDNFYMCOQGou_wteZCO4Ef7hAsCBnYu2-lX21ePZQ72BqzKArrN1lJB_BesdvwJuv_T5h9kpdXOVd5dfAVLk3J-w3-Wt7KoBoviSJPcaf3wVLsv6KhtIbbbIY9q65MSGo44u2M/s16000/MW_Hamster_side.jpg" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Final production version</td></tr></tbody></table><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaA0OUHwVWRMGo2FeGMV48oEtrp0Mvt5FUu4qtivNi18eemvIRcsk-0Mm8xoUASEtm9OKTz_rTQ7HcpCyyiMDI-q86YApi0S6mzeyFj5rQHZ8iS1Y5-UX8wV8Cz1yCs4vTf2II_qa4zlI2yrPCMLoCx4QWAgyoZDj11WIkHd0fohSUMoYeSeayAWRP1XHg/s766/MW_Hamster_sketchlayout.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="766" data-original-width="580" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaA0OUHwVWRMGo2FeGMV48oEtrp0Mvt5FUu4qtivNi18eemvIRcsk-0Mm8xoUASEtm9OKTz_rTQ7HcpCyyiMDI-q86YApi0S6mzeyFj5rQHZ8iS1Y5-UX8wV8Cz1yCs4vTf2II_qa4zlI2yrPCMLoCx4QWAgyoZDj11WIkHd0fohSUMoYeSeayAWRP1XHg/s16000/MW_Hamster_sketchlayout.jpg" /></a></p><p>This was the first time I was tasked with adding a light feature to a plush. Inspired by funny snakes like Sir Hiss from Disney's Robin Hood, I designed my own royal snake. I think snakes are really silly, so it was fun making a plush version with a bouncy, coiled body. Top it with a crown and you've got a very regal but funny snake.<br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFYIgTKSumcmW2h-bH5AyixWbtANlHG8dEm6O92cmnytAPEF7pzluMO3-vZl6AScDbptpUFJQypCHRl_wseLFgrgaNmvm7fu2n7Zm_toZ1pa0NYCkGlXinJGa05G7IBtWDz1kiklxRMuTLLXvdFtq2KtiPioZ1Mxwg6nrkDpN0S7t8XNju2B0IQ5C7uQ/s803/snakes_3row.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="803" data-original-width="580" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFYIgTKSumcmW2h-bH5AyixWbtANlHG8dEm6O92cmnytAPEF7pzluMO3-vZl6AScDbptpUFJQypCHRl_wseLFgrgaNmvm7fu2n7Zm_toZ1pa0NYCkGlXinJGa05G7IBtWDz1kiklxRMuTLLXvdFtq2KtiPioZ1Mxwg6nrkDpN0S7t8XNju2B0IQ5C7uQ/s16000/snakes_3row.jpg" /></a></div><br /><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxCTFlQcX7LfWbVyQKLdMHNjzYMkCWBYl5QY_JtfTqRwc2RuQAk1yJS4Z02T4Q7wchED6TqOn2dKeYbceyVmAjp55NgUEV5llTgBijSkPMe4r_4vfPg-6I1X_GJU5utFJmVB2CWDXrTYNnQF0E0ahA5e3uAIJyQCPvQVI4MYyuSPu94kR15Rr4fkETvA/s790/Snake_greenfront.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="790" data-original-width="580" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxCTFlQcX7LfWbVyQKLdMHNjzYMkCWBYl5QY_JtfTqRwc2RuQAk1yJS4Z02T4Q7wchED6TqOn2dKeYbceyVmAjp55NgUEV5llTgBijSkPMe4r_4vfPg-6I1X_GJU5utFJmVB2CWDXrTYNnQF0E0ahA5e3uAIJyQCPvQVI4MYyuSPu94kR15Rr4fkETvA/s16000/Snake_greenfront.jpg" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhE5swsE7a3_n-tu90qjmrN9dfpjRSyOzaGj_Bo3QlOAId3Uh4qw9SYh29AFenUjncM0yy6_0uK3xpwIqK2iqq3TGSlYdjj070FnQtCkyakYVqrkSkCQEaj_RrtzposcdVIaClwRdt-k1CiFy6bc64lzUTdMCo8abdVIyLdP2g3EV0CG9XVN1M9K5ef8Q/s868/Snake_greenside.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="868" data-original-width="580" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhE5swsE7a3_n-tu90qjmrN9dfpjRSyOzaGj_Bo3QlOAId3Uh4qw9SYh29AFenUjncM0yy6_0uK3xpwIqK2iqq3TGSlYdjj070FnQtCkyakYVqrkSkCQEaj_RrtzposcdVIaClwRdt-k1CiFy6bc64lzUTdMCo8abdVIyLdP2g3EV0CG9XVN1M9K5ef8Q/s16000/Snake_greenside.jpg" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJV1OsudFaTSolrAbg2tEX2wQv4N3u8FQbJa3RGUjWXr1PuC1vbuiF6WUbFMEWmxRFkuNLPrDLdeMqEkoJSdtBBYyF4w2JuNgxpFK7tveygvutHctHWwbz-ksoLMncSki9rarCZo9d7miO2w3Su1JkbFnCksnGa_jTvyGsf_nW0mk4NW6AjU5XbQb-0g/s883/Snake_greenback.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="883" data-original-width="580" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJV1OsudFaTSolrAbg2tEX2wQv4N3u8FQbJa3RGUjWXr1PuC1vbuiF6WUbFMEWmxRFkuNLPrDLdeMqEkoJSdtBBYyF4w2JuNgxpFK7tveygvutHctHWwbz-ksoLMncSki9rarCZo9d7miO2w3Su1JkbFnCksnGa_jTvyGsf_nW0mk4NW6AjU5XbQb-0g/s16000/Snake_greenback.jpg" /></a></div><p><a href="http://alec-longstreth.com">Alec </a>often draws funny looking snake sketch, be them sad or mad, they always crack me up. I think the eyelashes add a lot of character.<br /></p><p>The finished snake measures:<br />9 inches long (nose to body coil)<br />10 inches wide (base to top of head)<br />7 inches long (body coil) </p><p>It's a great pattern for extra scraps, you can patch them all

The plush version is smaller and more huggable at about 15 inches tall and 12.5 inches front to back.<br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhLxVKXuH-vVkiK3o_QKEYOSEdEJA6wLT5iIkyDHkQvzqUpXdvuxnEvcyp9PCIjfht1s-ucMqCahGhhd2r43-AL8zf-wXB29iccI5lXv4N6x2YcYAVxvCdPlA_59UvZrPMiqtvG71P1kOlHGDSrAspgbBWVttR3HWKhUzlZZml_-ynEcwtP4pHjTOS6w/s592/Bearret_V4_sidescale.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="592" data-original-width="580" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhLxVKXuH-vVkiK3o_QKEYOSEdEJA6wLT5iIkyDHkQvzqUpXdvuxnEvcyp9PCIjfht1s-ucMqCahGhhd2r43-AL8zf-wXB29iccI5lXv4N6x2YcYAVxvCdPlA_59UvZrPMiqtvG71P1kOlHGDSrAspgbBWVttR3HWKhUzlZZml_-ynEcwtP4pHjTOS6w/s16000/Bearret_V4_sidescale.jpg" /></a></div><br />Claire Sandershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15565314090002765818noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5188762398363384082.post-78652981574627675562021-09-08T07:00:00.120-06:002021-09-08T07:00:00.228-06:00Kitty Sweet Tooth plush toy<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirQ2sGxsMaCm5AL8SQvBuBgEZhbUhozoFpEKKRPn657aUNp_YfSb6vqzyskiZLts3ThmvkTGA2gUZnMDunnD7nXefYUENR_c5bX46svwNJyJSiWFFvDcJfKeEkHRLygkfmzUAbmPHZ_Pou/s746/KittySW_cover.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="746" data-original-width="580" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirQ2sGxsMaCm5AL8SQvBuBgEZhbUhozoFpEKKRPn657aUNp_YfSb6vqzyskiZLts3ThmvkTGA2gUZnMDunnD7nXefYUENR_c5bX46svwNJyJSiWFFvDcJfKeEkHRLygkfmzUAbmPHZ_Pou/w249-h320/KittySW_cover.jpg" width="249" /></a></div><p> <a href="https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250196774">Kitty Sweet Tooth</a> is a graphic novel for young readers about the silly adventures of Kitty
Sweet Tooth, who as her name implies loves desserts! Written by Abby Denson and illustrated
by Utomaru, the book was released this spring.<br /></p><p>The editor Robyn Chapman commissioned me to make a plush version of Kitty Sweet Tooth as a gift for the creators.<br /></p><p>I took reference images of Kitty from throughout the book and figured out a simple pose and facial expression for the plush toy version.</p><p>Her face is a combination of appliquéd fabric and machine embroidery. The process of creating this plush started with TrevyMetal sharing an illustration of his Green Meanie character. He also shared some great reference of similar existing products that he liked, that helped me visualize what he would like to see with his character turned into plush.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-Gz7H3JGtA7cuRijpCT_bBk7zVAU4MKR6CKAUWh0OCGIbFTDaPpXw2VtzGljhH15FfAn7-JffiHLwEN7xBkAOQQ1Dj8H2V5aP4oefo8VfRWMk48pgRA2EBjwIYAMzeg7OfzfAboMKB-vh/s1600/GreenMeanie_sketch.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="474" data-original-width="580" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-Gz7H3JGtA7cuRijpCT_bBk7zVAU4MKR6CKAUWh0OCGIbFTDaPpXw2VtzGljhH15FfAn7-JffiHLwEN7xBkAOQQ1Dj8H2V5aP4oefo8VfRWMk48pgRA2EBjwIYAMzeg7OfzfAboMKB-vh/s1600/GreenMeanie_sketch.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />From his drawing, I made my own sketch of the front and back. Making my own drawing helps me think of how the flat drawing will be built into a 3D shape made of multiple pattern pieces. The Green Meanie has some interesting facial features that needed to be shaped out like the folds in its nose bridge, the pushed out eyelids, the flared mustache and the muzzle shape. I made various versions out of muslin, going back and forth tweaking paper pattern pieces and sewing up sample variations until it looked good. Then I made a full plush fabric version for TrevyMetal and sent it to him in person. Once he could feel it, he had a couple more adjustments. I included those in the next sample and then the Green Meanie plush was officially created.<br />

Often what I'm asked to do is come up with lots of product ideas and sketch them out for the in house team to think about. This one was for a molded rubber cat toy with a Mylar film crinkle feature. I came up with all sorts of different things that might look cute and Sport Pet ended up making the turtle. I don't always know what gets made as it's a long process that I'm usually just a part of the beginning of, but it's always fun to see a sketch made real.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

They did send me a sample of the jellyfish too, but I'm not sure if that went into production. Using the same basic body but swapping out ears, tails and face details you can make a dog, cat or rabbit doll. I was inspired by my two young daughters dressing up all their various stuffed animals with doll clothes. I wanted to keep this design simple but still leave lots of room for variation by using a two color design with a main body color, then contrasting color for paws, belly and inner ears. I included plastic beans in their arms, legs and bottom to help them flop and sit. <br /></div><p></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghdi6Fz2h7ti7ik8033olxkaOqfSMOI_WC4BGW5W0_uJ88BK2lw7mpg9ZbsTby4lXPhpfsY1sIdz3TjCNQNZJraH217NEp17m973eATjbEqj2HHQUDn3Q-rmikDpJProN_yspTgHrDindy/s580/FaunaFriends_3bluedogs.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="352" data-original-width="580" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghdi6Fz2h7ti7ik8033olxkaOqfSMOI_WC4BGW5W0_uJ88BK2lw7mpg9ZbsTby4lXPhpfsY1sIdz3TjCNQNZJraH217NEp17m973eATjbEqj2HHQUDn3Q-rmikDpJProN_yspTgHrDindy/s16000/FaunaFriends_3bluedogs.jpg" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Dog<br /></td></tr></tbody></table><p></p><p></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigAGs6Fnht_iFiUrfzbyAAr2mIat70LanV5dNL_Q7nDd3mcny3zVDAZkTtY-skbES9422cum-p3xkzFlOKqXpjZq4FPMWb3ZmwK4QNBGXcexLERaypO-_84r4KwloaxUzC6hjgZmOGJq-B/s580/FaunaFriends_3pinkcat.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="352" data-original-width="580" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigAGs6Fnht_iFiUrfzbyAAr2mIat70LanV5dNL_Q7nDd3mcny3zVDAZkTtY-skbES9422cum-p3xkzFlOKqXpjZq4FPMWb3ZmwK4QNBGXcexLERaypO-_84r4KwloaxUzC6hjgZmOGJq-B/s16000/FaunaFriends_3pinkcat.jpg" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Cat<br /></td></tr></tbody></table><p></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDwO2-_WTbW6YcYWijFY8PvgqR6sJzxz2qwQJtZGVQIcpryolE2hOjmi6qco-dJERhwiAm1Ovu5euA9SYvHJXf73We8HR2akcS7TGnvIZSKi5eW_zldFNnXEEemae01h-88EXtvoZAEPg6/s580/FaunaFriends_3greenrabbit.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="352" data-original-width="580" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDwO2-_WTbW6YcYWijFY8PvgqR6sJzxz2qwQJtZGVQIcpryolE2hOjmi6qco-dJERhwiAm1Ovu5euA9SYvHJXf73We8HR2akcS7TGnvIZSKi5eW_zldFNnXEEemae01h-88EXtvoZAEPg6/s16000/FaunaFriends_3greenrabbit.jpg" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Rabbit<br /></td></tr></tbody></table><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlggjs1nq8B6bXqHnFn5oZiCuYLuLebI8zTRj7aIHkhnGWRvi6lG1AwMNe5NtOQ_jIbao0CDG-BKSZJsh5ZUUF2o0QCrhmrJjpZBlkhtqXn9nRgfZjXPqB27v6-LoEQw4-vpFjGt8pRX31/s580/FaunaFriends_colorlay.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="499" data-original-width="580" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlggjs1nq8B6bXqHnFn5oZiCuYLuLebI8zTRj7aIHkhnGWRvi6lG1AwMNe5NtOQ_jIbao0CDG-BKSZJsh5ZUUF2o0QCrhmrJjpZBlkhtqXn9nRgfZjXPqB27v6-LoEQw4-vpFjGt8pRX31/s16000/FaunaFriends_colorlay.jpg" /></a></div><p>The basic body is about ten inches tall from feet to head. I made prototypes and samples of their pet toy ideas. As is usual with prototyping work, not everything I make gets manufactured, but this time it did. I worked on the prototype for this cat wand toy in 2015, then saw on the shelves at Target in 2016. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBITFxb2pRndwA2Nok1jKh7Rgq1H8ySH_8s3DR9swE0rDYaUBxlhzQ8Ji9g_e38Whstt2OxDD5QSS4CRosd6RId5VhMYqc10AaiqpGs35d47_eLcIK9IfUifUML-9YlsRq_ZuhmfrzbtoL/s1600/BlueBird_package.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="912" data-original-width="580" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBITFxb2pRndwA2Nok1jKh7Rgq1H8ySH_8s3DR9swE0rDYaUBxlhzQ8Ji9g_e38Whstt2OxDD5QSS4CRosd6RId5VhMYqc10AaiqpGs35d47_eLcIK9IfUifUML-9YlsRq_ZuhmfrzbtoL/s1600/BlueBird_package.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXLId9UsNuMAZ1kDerb-0Ht4JNo8eQT758yBaaOZSGAtdYILi6mbZC0hbKqPpMFSJhgqrIUdirF12A7mfSyU-r5W8UZYZg8lsWduipLFqNv8tRoFHzlEbd-Zuba9Qq0KdjMmlJO-0vIFkT/s1600/Catwand_birdtarget.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="780" data-original-width="580" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXLId9UsNuMAZ1kDerb-0Ht4JNo8eQT758yBaaOZSGAtdYILi6mbZC0hbKqPpMFSJhgqrIUdirF12A7mfSyU-r5W8UZYZg8lsWduipLFqNv8tRoFHzlEbd-Zuba9Qq0KdjMmlJO-0vIFkT/s1600/Catwand_birdtarget.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
The design process starts with sketches: <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXMaZnNxufn2dHM20uYgaSRgcANi7cvW5dsKRBJTrGnfm6nhGLne4YaU_G_Rp2lIV3iSm052rmE4aiWIY3znR4KePHLgYaxKn8X1-8xrl1dsXvuqyS4MCC7i91_LkqXkFVjOQheN_XdB7X/s1600/Bluebird_sketch.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="559" data-original-width="580" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXMaZnNxufn2dHM20uYgaSRgcANi7cvW5dsKRBJTrGnfm6nhGLne4YaU_G_Rp2lIV3iSm052rmE4aiWIY3znR4KePHLgYaxKn8X1-8xrl1dsXvuqyS4MCC7i91_LkqXkFVjOQheN_XdB7X/s1600/Bluebird_sketch.jpg" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I then worked up the first prototype:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_M3Kdb6wc7JiHNbfu_Yo5hyphenhyphenmFnzqf1bMMSVQW6MlttEu68haQ66dsEMIDdotZHKO0xUsSHLFuC8XWtEjHfxFR_doIWUN3blrGXbyfaLhED-I_1XZ6_-eBDAs3w5eDAumiqnegqQd7mu_O/s1600/bluebirdflower_wand.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="602" data-original-width="580" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_M3Kdb6wc7JiHNbfu_Yo5hyphenhyphenmFnzqf1bMMSVQW6MlttEu68haQ66dsEMIDdotZHKO0xUsSHLFuC8XWtEjHfxFR_doIWUN3blrGXbyfaLhED-I_1XZ6_-eBDAs3w5eDAumiqnegqQd7mu_O/s1600/bluebirdflower_wand.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I received notes and changes from Sport Pet, then made a revised prototype:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjw7GXTSp-ufwCnAyHsRf4um-p_PI1ktEAamx7CLrjbqhQZWCeITdz3gtSwuF1YusIvmwJ8zfaCUzFtWu6ziNUu7lAM4BvFgJNDVtZIl-KQavj0qcuGrZqkcfyClLVZCOmn45GsM4HnHkkc/s1600/BlueBird.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="645" data-original-width="580" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjw7GXTSp-ufwCnAyHsRf4um-p_PI1ktEAamx7CLrjbqhQZWCeITdz3gtSwuF1YusIvmwJ8zfaCUzFtWu6ziNUu7lAM4BvFgJNDVtZIl-KQavj0qcuGrZqkcfyClLVZCOmn45GsM4HnHkkc/s1600/BlueBird.jpg" /></a></div>
This became the sample and pattern that was used to make the final pieces.<br />
<br />
I worked up lots of different themed ideas for these wands, and made a lot of different samples. Maybe these made it to the store shelves, I did see some products looked very similar, but I'm not completely sure they were my designs. <br />

<br />
Rocky Crocodile is the latest addition to my plush toy menagerie. One of my inspirations was the book, <a href="https://www.quentinblake.com/books/enormous-crocodile">The Enormous Crocodile by Quentin Blake</a>. I love the sneaky crocodile who is trying to eat kids. Rocky is a much sweeter crocodile who would rather play with kids than eat them.<br />
<br />
This is a super fun pattern to play around with using different fabric patterns and textures. I really like the chenille on the top body creating a neat fluffy texture. In the pattern, it's optional to add some plastic pellets inside the legs but it gives them a nice floppy feel. I also enjoyed using felt for the spikes and claws, it gives a sharper look but then it's reinforced with a stitched line for extra durability.<br />

I had the pleasure of working with the <a href="http://goldieblox.com/">Goldie Blox</a> design team to create the dress pattern for the Ruby Rails Skydive Action Figure that was released in 2015.<br />
<br />
It started with a sketch from the character designer at Goldie Blox. Ruby is a fashionable coder, so they wanted to represent that in her outfit. They liked the idea of a cute dress, with a tulle underlay along with a printed pattern on the bodice that would highlight her computer skills.<br />
<br />
I showed the team a lot of different fabric options with colors in the coral pink and magenta families. Ruby is friends with Goldie who wears purple overalls, they wanted something that would complement but stand out from Goldie's outfit. They ended up with a purple/magenta color, but it stands out against Goldie's lavender/purple overalls.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7zidhPAudgFJzNWKgU5dYD_0Ep8tcMJnoH5BsGcl-n-0Tb7JRSMC9EMi4rDsgZ5wTxAAlfMBnuvcYCCi5t2iT_jdCpJyNQea3ehsV0kGZtPC1ImF99iSJOeRIIBoFW0tPz2aqXl_BtyC8/s1600/RubyRail_dress_sketch.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="389" data-original-width="580" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7zidhPAudgFJzNWKgU5dYD_0Ep8tcMJnoH5BsGcl-n-0Tb7JRSMC9EMi4rDsgZ5wTxAAlfMBnuvcYCCi5t2iT_jdCpJyNQea3ehsV0kGZtPC1ImF99iSJOeRIIBoFW0tPz2aqXl_BtyC8/s1600/RubyRail_dress_sketch.jpg" /></a></div>
Building a dress pattern for a doll is pretty similar to making clothes for humans. One difference is that with the smaller size you have to factor in tiny seam allowances, but you can often remove seams to simplify the sewing. Ruby's dress doesn't have any shoulder seams, because they are unnecessary for a doll her size ( 7 inches tall) and it creates fewer pattern pieces which is easier to assemble.<br />
<br />
Pretty quickly the idea of a print on the fabric was thrown out, but the shine of liquid lamé was very appealing to the team.<br />
<br />
<b><i>Version 1 in liquid lamé fabric:</i></b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJ88K9yCy1_Za7fl0luB2HhHf4tuaUGHs2ElX7jhOSz_ULmnIjcKFtXWLmBKNORPNctCTZldN4rRzHEFg-E31ENgUaZJAK5FhqT19LO9WVbPehSAmSWfEJYyv2A3BaYX98KZWXIyevPHA0/s1600/RubyRails_dressv1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="391" data-original-width="580" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJ88K9yCy1_Za7fl0luB2HhHf4tuaUGHs2ElX7jhOSz_ULmnIjcKFtXWLmBKNORPNctCTZldN4rRzHEFg-E31ENgUaZJAK5FhqT19LO9WVbPehSAmSWfEJYyv2A3BaYX98KZWXIyevPHA0/s1600/RubyRails_dressv1.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I made a sample with the liquid lamé fabric that the teamed like, but when they got the manufacturing prices back it turned out it was too much. So I worked on the next version in a simpler fabric with ribbon sleeves and a ribbon sewn into the hem to create the look of a double layer of skirt without the cost. That combination turned out the have the right cost and a style that worked for the team.<br />

I worked with the Meow Wolf product design team to turn that experience into a backpack.<br />
<br />
The backpack is constructed out of off-white vinyl fabric, with interior vortex made from a combination of frosted clear vinyl with sparkle vortex overlay. It's fully lined with white water resistant rip-stop nylon. It's got a handle shape on the exterior but you pull the whole door panel open. I used magnet snaps to pull the door back together when you need it closed. The used <a href="http://spoonflower.com/">spoonflower</a> to print the interior door image onto cotton fabric, then combined it with the other door pieces.<br />
<br />
I handmade a limited edition of 20 pieces. Then Meow Wolf will be getting them mass manufactured to keep them regularly in stock.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpKgBkPdTZxsc3XSOLlc96XjbhS6xX0abnov1juc6OgKPO0K1HuPACDjgm5VRknVXsI5LsVKWTdwhMZcpBpg1puK31i8UDLwrW0JDN6FeqVr4_Vsw2H6VJV78kx1QbpPUYKayVhIjsdfUs/s1600/Pearpair.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="471" data-original-width="580" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpKgBkPdTZxsc3XSOLlc96XjbhS6xX0abnov1juc6OgKPO0K1HuPACDjgm5VRknVXsI5LsVKWTdwhMZcpBpg1puK31i8UDLwrW0JDN6FeqVr4_Vsw2H6VJV78kx1QbpPUYKayVhIjsdfUs/s1600/Pearpair.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcuZyPN9DeUJg-9v6Nc6LkEHiQ4lySeT5I0gBNmScU8CnNf94vymVKPbbLjQgkDrmWDUdXtTtxJm3w8n7aXRhBoOpCGTUIT3IKDN8S_7AgWZN8i390rNx9GEm7Pd2tuXzJdGIH6tD2zzZW/s1600/REFPear.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="405" data-original-width="300" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcuZyPN9DeUJg-9v6Nc6LkEHiQ4lySeT5I0gBNmScU8CnNf94vymVKPbbLjQgkDrmWDUdXtTtxJm3w8n7aXRhBoOpCGTUIT3IKDN8S_7AgWZN8i390rNx9GEm7Pd2tuXzJdGIH6tD2zzZW/s320/REFPear.jpg" width="237" /></a></div>
The design process started with Marlena sending me a sketch of what she wanted. I used that as reference to make my own scale sketch which would be the basis of starting to build the pear pattern.<br />
<br />
I made the face an Illustrator file to easily turn it into a machine embroidery file. I still use SewArt to convert images to embroidery files for my Brother PE-770 embroidery machine.<br />
<br />
Once I got the shape of the pear right, I sent Marlena several minky plush fabric swatches to pick the right color for the body. I made the stem out of the cotton flannel to still be soft but a have different feel than just another minky piece.<br />
<br />
Once the final sample was approved, I made a bunch of pears!<br />

<br />
I made a plush toy version of another <a href="http://meowwolf.com/">Meow Wolf</a> mascot, Plotzo the rat. You can find Plotzo hanging out at <a href="https://meowwolf.com/2017/03/15/free-arcade-games-wiggys-plasma-plex">Wiggy's Plasma Plex</a> with the rest of the juviegangers. This toy version is the only one you would dare touch, as the real Plotzo would rather stab you than hug you.<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhljkRIPNDc9K_vHjHDue9eHWMaaPIi6PM6fBN__1hmf4xwKot642O6_Xs6XBsZ9vLdR7nQJL1vvh228LySftmynlrX43MAVw_sW8hCeFBf7UCik42RWZzmVP7uriu0CUS0O9RQKZ4AExBW/s1600/Plotzo_cutout.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="894" data-original-width="580" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhljkRIPNDc9K_vHjHDue9eHWMaaPIi6PM6fBN__1hmf4xwKot642O6_Xs6XBsZ9vLdR7nQJL1vvh228LySftmynlrX43MAVw_sW8hCeFBf7UCik42RWZzmVP7uriu0CUS0O9RQKZ4AExBW/s320/Plotzo_cutout.jpg" width="206" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Plotzo cut out</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I used Benji Geary's painted cut out as the main reference for the toy version of Plotzo. Then I did my own sketch simplifying details that wouldn't show up well in a plush toy roughly 14 inches tall.<br />

Plotzo is a rude dude with attitude and that is represented in his attire. His jacket has real studs on the shoulders, and anti symbol patch on the back. He's been in a couple of scrapes so he's got a notch taken out of his ear, but he doesn't care. Who knew that acid wash denim would make a come back?... Plotzo did.<br />

<br />
Just in time for summer, I made a couple of cool cat patches. I took the cat design from the<a href="http://www.clairesanders.net/2018/01/animal-icons.html"> animal icons</a> added some sunglasses and turned it into a plush patch. I made a couple of color variations but since my daughter, Suzanne's current favorite color is pink, she picked the pink one for her shirt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCeJ_ww99qSJ6g6gfJ6w9qG56fZRbAIr57HWXmXKrBLs7UipOOJ626TcHJqWYIZblcwUg0sUjNIUiS4vmICx-Qvy1NN12CHefR5NJN84JLKqRMQh9_YCBTDHUwwmAIj6lsPwvpdAxBaTc8/s1600/CoolCat_blackshirt.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="524" data-original-width="580" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCeJ_ww99qSJ6g6gfJ6w9qG56fZRbAIr57HWXmXKrBLs7UipOOJ626TcHJqWYIZblcwUg0sUjNIUiS4vmICx-Qvy1NN12CHefR5NJN84JLKqRMQh9_YCBTDHUwwmAIj6lsPwvpdAxBaTc8/s1600/CoolCat_blackshirt.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I used a combinations of fabrics to give the patches some texture, they have a base of plush, the sunglasses are corduroy with the lenses made out of satin for some shine. Then the cat features are machine embroidered on top.<br />

This past summer, my step-Grandma passed away. She was a prolific knitter and amazing weaver. From her, I inherited a lot of yarn and a partially finished baby blanket. This was a more recent project than my <a href="http://www.clairesanders.net/2018/05/grandma-projects-part-1-knit-afghan.html">Grandma's Jiffy Afghan</a> with the pattern being from the Plymouth Yarn Studio 8-hour Baby Blanket booklet.<br />
It was about a quarter started and I began my part working on it a bit before my baby was born. It also got pushed aside for awhile. Once she was born, much like the afghan, it was an easy project to work on whenever I could find a couple of minutes.<br />
<br />
Baby Wendy has her fair share of baby blankets now, so I'll likely gift this one to the next baby. I can't say it took me exactly 8 hours, but the booklet has a ton of cool variations on baby blankets and it was fun and easy to make.<br />

When my grandma passed away a couple of years ago (at age 100!) she left some unfinished projects behind. She was a prolific knitter and crocheter during her day. I still have the Christmas stocking she knitted for me when I was a kid. Jammed in a bag was the beginning of a "Jiffy Knitted Afghan" in classic late '70s colors.<br />

I completed it last year at stated but the stitches were really loose so it got stretched out easily. Plus I didn't like how I attached the panels together and I had run out of the light gold color and had to add a section of eggshell at the end. Overall I wasn't happy with it so I crammed it in my shed and didn't think about it until my second baby was born. Knitting is a good start/stop project to work on when you just have little spurts of time between childcare.<br />
<br />
I took it all apart and doubled up the yarn which muted the colors a bit, but also unified them by having the light gold color run throughout the afghan. I alternated blocks of knit and purl so it was more interesting and wouldn't curl up. The doubled yarn is much more stable even using giant size 19 knitting needles. I tried to keep a feeling of the original with the color stripes. I made two panels and sewed them together.<br />

The new size is much smaller, about 52 inches wide by 42 inches tall. It makes a good small lap or baby blanket, or in my house, a good cat blanket.<br />

I've had a little bit of extra time lately, so I've been able to do some knitting which is both relaxing and fun for me.<br />
<br />
My local library has a magazine exchange and my mom picked up the Winter 2007/2008 issue of Vogue Knitting. Most of the projects were much more involved than I was ready to commit to, but there was a section on lace knitting. From the article by Shirley Paden, I used the Fan and Feather lace pattern to make a baby blanket.<br />

<br />
I continue to have yarn donated to me, so I went through my stash for this project. I had a bunch of skeins of pink wool from my mother-in-law so that formed the base, then I found a yellow and blue wool with a similar weight to mix it up a little bit. I like how the color change really emphasizes the scallop shape.<br />

The baby quilt I made for my first daughter Suzanne was based on <a href="https://www.alecillustration.com/books/#/alecs-animal-alphabet/">Alec's animal alphabet paintings</a>. I wanted to make another fun quilt, but didn't want to make the same alphabet quilt. Tucked away I've had a quilt project that seemed like it would never get finished so I pulled it out to see if I could turn it into a baby quilt.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjC7bC_btBeEJqBAPpZCrjtiSMBaFApCiho5DQSyajhaKB8zzK8tZsDH7FPPPLSu0bXMMhrbzfqLkUp5u5kGdYhgBk4bi8lSFjDpW9bMczcYGGxiyY7xxYL9T4qu0iBptyqyF-8ZKrmRxsg/s1600/NeedleworkBook.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="481" data-original-width="580" height="165" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjC7bC_btBeEJqBAPpZCrjtiSMBaFApCiho5DQSyajhaKB8zzK8tZsDH7FPPPLSu0bXMMhrbzfqLkUp5u5kGdYhgBk4bi8lSFjDpW9bMczcYGGxiyY7xxYL9T4qu0iBptyqyF-8ZKrmRxsg/s200/NeedleworkBook.png" width="200" /></a>When I moved from Oakland, CA to Vermont in 2010, I had a lot of scrap fabric that I didn't know what to do with. Instead of throwing it out, I cut out a ton of hexagons with the plan to make the Grandma's Flower Garden quilt from the 1979 edition of Reader's Digest Complete Guide to Needlework.<br />
<br />
It was a great background project, whenever I had time would I would piece some of the flowers together. After I had a bunch I started connecting them, but I still didn't have a finished size in mind.<br />

<br />
I pulled out what I had of the quilt and decided it would be crib size (45"x60"), but I also wanted to add some other element to make it more baby/kid friendly. So I made 24 different animal icons, based on <a href="http://www.clairesanders.net/2018/01/animal-icons.html">these illustrations</a>, and machine embroidered them into the "flowers"<br />

Traditionally this quilt is pieced by hand to make sure all the seams line up and are very flat. I figured out how to work it by machine, it's not perfect, but it went a lot faster than hand piecing, regardless it still took me years to pull it all together.<br />
<br />
The neat thing about giving this to my daughter is that it's made of fabric patches from all sorts of projects I've completed over the years. Included are fabrics from <a href="http://www.clairesanders.net/2011/02/cowboy-shirt-featuring-dragons.html">Alec's dragon shirt</a>, <a href="http://www.clairesanders.net/2011/06/color-swatch-dress.html">Color swatch dress</a>, <a href="http://www.clairesanders.net/2011/06/dia-de-los-muertos-skeleton-dress.html">Dia Des Los Muertos dress</a>, <a href="http://www.clairesanders.net/2011/06/sea-life-dress.html">Sea Life dress</a> and many more.Claire Sandershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15565314090002765818noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5188762398363384082.post-16290834962546826992018-02-27T10:53:00.004-07:002018-02-27T10:53:54.528-07:00Meow Wolf: Cat Wolf Purse<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Inspired by the face of the <a href="http://www.clairesanders.net/2016/03/meow-wolf-plush-toy.html">plush Cat Wolf </a>that I worked on with Emily Montoya, I designed and made a Cat Wolf purse. It's a small shoulder bag with an embroidered plush face, and the back is canvas with the Meow Wolf logo. They are currently available in the <a href="http://www.meowwolf.com/">Meow Wolf Santa Fe</a> gift shop.</div>

As a gift for a friend who both likes toads and grew up in Santa Fe, I made an adobe toad abode.<br />
<br />
I thought about a lot of ways to make this before I started. When you look up toad homes, they often recommend just flipping over a terra cotta pot and making a little opening so the toad can get in. I wanted mine to be more custom. I have seen square terra cotta pots, but I was worried I would crack it trying to cut the door out. Instead I went with making it out of plaster of Paris. I made a quick mold out of cardboard. It was pretty sloppy so when the house came out I had to sand it a fair amount, but that's part of the charm of the Southwest, everything out here is a little DIY. I painted it with acrylic paint, then glued on the wood vigas. For the final touch of Santa Fe, I made a chile ristra out of sculpey to hang from the vigas. Once baked, I sealed the ristra with clear acrylic nail polish.<br />
<br />
It's winter so any frogs or toads that would be in NM are hibernating, but hopefully with its new home in Maine, come springtime, there will be a toad waiting list to live in this one of a kind adobe home.<br />

When my first baby, Suzanne was born I made her a <a href="http://www.clairesanders.net/2015/03/alecs-animal-alphabet-quilt.html">quilt</a> inspired by <a href="https://www.alecillustration.com/books/#/alecs-animal-alphabet/">Alec's Animal Alphabet</a>, it was the second one as I had made a very similar one for my niece first. I didn't want to make a third animal alphabet quilt that was the same, but I wasn't sure I'd have the time for a completely from scratch quilt. I'll share the finished quilt and how it came together once the baby arrives.<br />
<br />
To personalize this new quilt I created 24 animal icons, which I used to machine embroidery on the baby quilt. The pieces on the quilt were small, so I needed to make very simple designs that would show up clearly on a roughly 1.5"x1.5" space. I decided to illustrate easy to identify animals and some personal favorites, plus a roadrunner since it's the state bird of New Mexico.<br />

</div>
When my Grandma passed away in 2016, I inherited some of her half finished knitting projects along with some knitting patterns she had saved. Included in them was a pattern to make Christmas stockings from McCall's Needlework and Crafts September/October 1982 issue.<br />
<br />
My daughter Suzanne didn't have a stocking and I found some extra time to use the pattern to make her a stocking of her very own. Since the pattern was pretty old, I didn't think I would find any of Aunt Lydia's heavy rug yarn and I only had so many sizes of double pointed needles, I decided to wing it. Luckily a Christmas stocking doesn't have to fit anyone I didn't do a gauge check, instead I just looked through my yarn stash, picked out some colors and got started. I mostly used Paton's classic wool yarn with a couple other random yarns thrown in.<br />
<br />

<br />
I used the pattern as a starting point, but I wanted to include Suzanne's name in the design. I worked that out on graph paper ahead of time and just started putting it in while still working on the pattern design. I didn't have a ton of the original red so that's why I added in some green stripes. I ended up buying another ball of red wool yarn to finish out the foot, it's not the same dye lot but I think it works.<br />
<br />
The stocking is about 23 inches long from the top to the toe. It should be a good size to cram lots of little presents into.<br />

I made a limited run of 20 pieces, but this one is also in development for getting mass produced for the <a href="http://www.meowwolf.com/">Meow Wolf</a> store.<br />

<br />
Snaggy is about 14 inches high, made of long black polyester faux fur. It has some plastic beans in the body so it can sit, and the arms are floppy enough to pose into different positions.<br />
<br />
For the arms and legs, Emily had a very specific striped gradient design in mind. I knew I couldn't find the pattern as preexisting fabric, so I took her pattern file and had it custom printed by <a href="http://spoonflower.com/">Spoonflower.</a> This was my first experience getting fabric printed from them. Spoonflower has come a long way with all the material options since I first remember hearing about them many years ago. I got Emily's stripe and gradient pattern printed onto a polyester knit they call Performance Knit. It has a little bit of stretch but not too much which is perfect for assembling the limbs. I was really impressed by how vibrant the printed fabric came out.<br />
